NEVADA COUNTY — This week, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office welcomed a new K9 Unit named Odin. Odin is a Belgian Malinois and turned 2 years old on December 19th. Odin’s birthday was also his first day of active service. A donation from the Rüdiger Foundation paid for the unit and handler training program.

Odin and his handler, Deputy Ross, underwent a six-week training course with D-TAC K9, a Northern California training organization. After 240 hours of training, Odin graduated on December 13th, specializing in obedience, suspect searching, building searching, tracking, article detention, handler protection, and apprehension. Sheriff Shannon Moon, who re-established the K9 Program at the Sheriff’s Office in 2020, says, “Odin will be providing a variety of patrol functions designed to increase officer safety, public safety, and the apprehension of suspects when needed.”
