QUINCY — On Monday, February 17 (Presidents’ Day), approximately 125 people, accompanied by a half-dozen or so dogs, gathered in front of the courthouse in Quincy (Plumas County) to make known their displeasure with the current administration in Washington, DC. The gathering was part of a nationwide effort organized by the group Rise and Resist, which describes itself as “50-50-1”, standing for 50 states, 50 protests, and one movement.

Hand-made signs were on abundant display, with messages ranging from stating that this country doesn’t need a king, to firing Elon Musk, to objections about mass firings of federal workers, to fighting fascism. Examples of signs included “No Don,” “Morons Are Governing America,” Make Nazis Bad Again,” “The Good ’N’ Word: No [to Don and Elon],” and “Elect a Clown, Expect a Circus.”

Those gathered to exercise their First Amendment right to assembly and speech ranged in age from small children to older adults. They came mostly from Plumas County, however a contingent of six persons traveled from Sierra County. Reception by persons driving by on Quincy’s Main Street was varied: some honked, gave a thumbs-up, or waved in support, some made their displeasure known with rude gestures, and some just tried to pretend they didn’t see anything.
