This past autumn we enjoyed tracking the games played by local high school boys football teams. Now, we are looking forward to doing this for the varsity girls basketball teams in our rural region.
Currently, most of the teams have already completed their pre-league season, primarily during tournaments. Here are the results compiled while the teams prepared for their “real” season, games against the other teams in their respective leagues.
Bear River Bruins: The nine members of the Bruins, led by three Seniors and two Juniors, played eight games since November 22 and were 2-2 halfway through this skein. Since December 6, they have won four straight games, outscoring their opponents 261-143, and now have a 6-2 record in the 2024-2024 season. Their next game, on January 3, will be played in Grass Valley against the Nevada Union Miners.
Chester Volcanos: Two Seniors, two Juniors, and eight Freshwomen comprise the Volcanos roster. Since December 5, the team has built a 4-2 record by scoring 256 points while giving up only 205 points. After the Happy Holidays break, the girls will play the Princeton Eagles at home on January 6.
Colfax Falcons: The three Seniors, five Juniors, two Sophomore, and one Freshwoman playing for the Falcons have built a 4-3 record during the seven games they played between November 23 and December 16. On January 4, they will return to the basketball court to host the St. Francis Lancers of Mountain View.
Lassen Grizzlies: The 11 players on this set of Grizzlies, four Seniors and seven Juniors won four and lost four games since their season began on December 5. Now, these young women are looking forward to getting a 5-4 record when they host the West Valley Eagles, in their first league game, on January 7.
Loyalton Grizzlies: With a roster containing three Seniors, two Juniors, two Sophomores, and four Freshwomen, these Grizzlies opened their season with losses to the Quincy Trojans and the Biggs Wolverines. Then the team won three in a row by defeating the Hamilton Braves, Maxwell Panthers, and Paradise Adventist Academy Cougars. These victories were followed by losses to the Quincy Trojans and the Portola Tigers. So, the team will have a 3-4 record when they compete this weekend at the 2024 Block F Tournament in Los Molinos.
Modoc Braves: The Braves, a team composed of four Seniors and seven Juniors, are 5-5 so far this season. Unlike most of the other teams in the area, the Braves will not be taking much of a break during the holidays. They have games scheduled at tournaments held December 19-21 and December 31-January 2. Then the Braves have two additional games to play before their first league game on January 14 against the Fall River Bulldogs.
Nevada Union Miners: Last year Nevada Union Miners ended their season with six consecutive losses. Their woes have continued during this season, after opening the 2024-2025 season with a victory over the Forest Lake Christian Falcons, the Miners lost all of the following five games for a 1-5 record heading into the holiday break. Their next game, on January 3 against a strong (6-2) Bear River Bruins team, is unlikely to result in an end to the current streak of losses.
Portola Tigers: The Tigers, a team of nine Seniors and two Sophomores, have had a good start to the season. Through December 16, they have won six of the eight games they’ve played since opening the season on December 3. And, like the Modoc Braves, the Tigers will continue to hone their skills with two tournaments scheduled during the next two weeks.
Plumas Charter Warriors: Having six 9th-graders, two Sophomores, three Juniors, and no Seniors on their roster, these Warriors appear to reflect the growth of interest in women’s basketball over the past year. So far, with one more tournament to play before the end of the year, the team has posted a 3-7 record.Win or lose, the girls will be gaining expertise and building a unit for the future.
Quincy Trojans: The Trojans, a team with 13 members (five Seniors, four Juniors, two Sophomores, and two Freshwomen, posted a 4-2 record between November 25 and December 14. After the holidays, the Trojans next game will be played on January 8 against the Loyalton Grizzlies.
Truckee Wolverines: Five Seniors, four Juniors, four Sophomores, and one Freshwoman are members of this team. Over the course of the six games they have played since December 2, these girls have been outscored 231-157 while winning two and losing four of these games. After the holidays, the Wolverines return to competition for their first league game on January 8, at home, against the Sparks Railroaders.
