MABIE — On January 29th, the body of 18-year-old Leonardo Mikelonis of Sparks, Nevada, was found on the middle fork of the Feather River between Portola and Graeagle. He had been fishing with two others, who reported him missing the previous afternoon, believing he had been swept under the ice.
Plumas County Search and Rescue responded within minutes of the initial 911 call at 2:49 PM on January 28th. The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office made contact with the reporting party at 2:59 PM. At that point, Eastern Plumas Ambulance and Beckwourth Peak Fire were involved in searching. California Highway Patrol, Graeagle Fire, and US Forest Service Law Enforcement deployed additional resources, including air and ground support.
The initial search yielded no results, so the search was continued at first light on January 29th. The press release announcing the discovery of Mikelonis’ body by Plumas County Search and Rescue was released after 4 PM. The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office offered its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
