Ms. Misita’s class performs “Run Run Rudolf”The Downieville School Holiday Show and Baked Goods Auction was a sweet success as parents and community members gathered to see Downieville Elementary School students perform at the Yuba Theatre for Holiday on Main last weekend. The evening began with Ms. Misita’s TK-1 class doing a medley of song favorites, including “Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and Chuck Berry’s “Run Run Rudolf.” It was fun to see the students rocking it out to the Christmas beat. Ms. Markee’s 2-3 class, accompanied by some older students, sang an amazing three-part round of “Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah” and also “These Are a Few of My Favorite Things” accompanied by Ms. Markee’s beautiful electric guitar. Locals have already enjoyed students playing their recorders on the street as they returned from the theatre to school for practice this w

The glitz and glamor of the roaring 20s came to life on the stage of the Yuba Theatre last weekend in the Downieville High School Drama production of The Great Gatsby. This sparkling adaptation beautifully captured the beloved American classic by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In Shakespearean tradition, the gender-bending casting showed off the considerable talents of our student stars, some of whom have been performing in DHS drama productions since elementary school. Mia Martinelli was self-assured and passionate in her role as self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby. Jay’s desire for wealth and popularity in the Jazz Age hid a deeper obsession – his burning desire for Daisy Buchanan, played by the lovely, sweet, and fickle Natalie Rust. Nick Carraway, played by Abigail Sainsbury, provided the perfect narration that held the piece together. Arianne Jackson was heavy-handed and hulking as the browbeater Tom Buchanan.Other performance highlights included Riley Pearmund with an authentic Maf

Jordan, of Sierra County Arts Council, recently visited Sacramento to rally with arts advocates from across the Golden State in support of the Arts. The Sierra County Arts Council has been advocating for the arts for many years and because of our united efforts we have seen an increase in State funding for the arts. We are especially grateful to Californians for the Arts and California Arts Advocates who engage with our legislature to ensure that rural Californians may experience art opportunities. Rural counties, like Sierra County, do not enjoy the same funding streams available in urban communities. Sierra County is dependent on State funding through the State-Local Partnership program from the California Arts Council to keep our doors open and provide for arts education, events and programs. On a stormy night in an isolated mansion, with the bridge out, the comedic cast of characters gathered to participate in a workshop hosted by rich and snooty Miss Penelope Michelin, played with aplomb by Tessa Jordan. The plot thickened as the ensemble cast were introduced and a variety of murder weapons and motives were revealed. The play’s unique ending utilized secret ballots gathered from the audience, who determined the killer in this maze of murder. There were many entertaining and hilarious performances by the large cast of quirky characters.Almos

DOWNIEVILLE - Home Grown Talent at The Yuba Theatre is always a surprise. This last holiday weekend was no exceptioPatrick Wilson was MC for the evening and did a fine job encouraging everyone to step up and show their talent. To start things off B.J Jordan played three original songs accompanied by stellar musician Joe Jimenez on bass and mandolin. Her song "Blood for Gold" was based on the life of her grandfather, miner Otto Strand, who was born in Forest City and spent his life as a hard rock miner in Sierra County. The folksy beat of her song harkened back to the days when the stamp-mill rhythm echoed through these canyons. The Brennan family was an audience favorite with the popular "Whiskey and Propane". Three kids sang along with their dad and the audience joined in. This is not the first time that 7 year old Charly Brennan has graced our stage and she her solo rendition of "This is Me" was sweet and fearless. Elijah Zuniga sang Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to
