The evening began with Ms. Misita’s TK-1 class doing a medley of song favorites, including “Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and Chuck Berry’s “Run Run Rudolf.” It was fun to see the students rocking it out to the Christmas beat. Ms. Markee’s 2-3 class, accompanied by some older students, sang an amazing three-part round of “Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah” and also “These Are a Few of My Favorite Things” accompanied by Ms. Markee’s beautiful electric guitar. Locals have already enjoyed students playing their recorders on the street as they returned from the theatre to school for practice this week. Ms. Markee has been teaching them how to read music using the recorder. We were so impressed at their precise rendition of “Jingle Bells” and “Good King Wenceslas” on the recorders.paper2.JPGMs. Edwards’ class performs “A Christmas Present for Santa”

Ms. Edwards’ 4-6 class then delighted us with a short play, “A Christmas Present for Santa,” that was adapted to include local celebrity Mr. Berardi. There were some hilarious moments as phone miss-dials connected Santa to some unexpected characters.

The evening rounded out with the traditional Baked Goods Auction, overseen by auctioneer extraordinaire Frank Lang, with a little help from Vana White impersonator Betty Jo Lang. “Grandma Murphy’s Famous Oatmeal Cookies” got the bidding off to a rousing start. High bids were placed for Darcy White’s “Chocolate Dipped Cream Puffs” and “Salted Pretzel Caramel Fudge.” Tessa Jordan’s “Ugly-As-Sin Lemon Meringue Pie,” inspired by Tessa and Alicia’s childhood bakery, reminded us that they were former Downieville School students who also performed in the Holiday Show in the day. Lynn Fillo’s “Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie” rounded out the evening on a high note.paper3.JPGMs. Edwards’ class performs “A Christmas Present for Santa”

Over $750 was raised by the auction to benefit Arts Education in our schools. Thank you to the students and staff of Downieville School and to all the bakers, bidders, volunteers, and community members who helped make this event a success. Thank you to Tim Jordan, who provided technical support. This was an event of the Sierra County Arts Council, a State-Local Partner with the California Arts Council.
