Fast electric vehicle chargers were installed in the Caboose Park parking lot earlier this year.

Earlier this year, the City of Portola opened four fast electric vehicle chargers in the parking lot at Caboose Park, in the middle of Commercial Street in Old Town Portola. They are currently the only DC fast chargers in Plumas County, according to plugshare.com. Public Level 2 AC chargers, which charge more slowly, are located at the Sierra Valley Nature Preserve on the Beckwourth-Calpine Road (County Road A-23) and at Dame Shirley Park in Quincy.

Construction of Portola’s public chargers was funded by the California Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project and did not involve any cost to the city. The city will, however, provide routine maintenance, such as snow removal, as part of its regular service in the commercial district. As electric vehicles become more common every year, the city and local business owners hope the new charging station will encourage people to visit the area and stop in Portola for a recharge.
