Portola Recycling Center to Reopen in April Under New Ownership

March 5, 2025

PORTOLA — Residents of Portola and eastern Plumas County will soon have a local opportunity to earn refunds from recycling containers with a California Redemption Value (CRV) label. Since the only recycling center in the eastern part of the county closed several years ago, the only local option has been to take containers to the transfer stations at Delleker or Graeagle, which accept CRV containers but do not pay a refund. That will change in April when Grizzly Creek Recycling will open at the former site of Dawes Recycling at 225 Taylor Avenue in Portola.

According to the new owner, Desmond Waelder, it will be a state-certified “weigh and pay” operation accepting glass, plastic, aluminum, and bi-metal CRV containers. The current rate for separated aluminum containers is $1.68 per pound. However, the center will not accept scrap metal, which can be taken to local transfer stations. Waelder also cautioned that there is a daily limit to the amount an individual can recycle: a pickup load is about the maximum for one day, he said. He also mentioned plans to work with the Parks and Recreation District to improve mobile collection and reduce problems of overflowing dumpsters at recreation sites. Grizzly Creek Recycling will be open 10-4 Monday-Friday.
