SIERRA BROOKS — On March 9th, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office reported that a lost dog was spotted wearing a bright orange collar in the Sierra Brooks area. The husky-type dog had been misidentified as a wolf by witnesses but was later confirmed to be a dog being searched for by its owner. The dog’s name was Benson, and he was under 1 year old and described as friendly.
According to Sheriff Mike Fisher, Benson was found by the family who owned him on Sunday deceased south of Sierra Brooks along Smithneck Creek. Initial findings suggested the cause of death was gunshot wounds.
The Sheriff’s Office requests that the public refrain from speculating about who may be responsible, but says that any information that may assist in the investigation can be reported by contacting the Office at (530) 289-3700. An individual who originally misidentified the dog as a wolf in a social media post is cooperating with the Sheriff’s Office and is not considered a suspect.
