With the regular season coming to a close, several of the teams we have been following have between excellent and slight chances of extending their season into playoff rounds.
Bear River Bruins: Since our last report, the Bruins were shocked on Wednesday, 2/5, by losing to the Lincoln Fighting Zebras by a score of 35-55 (a team they trounced 64-32 back on 1/15). Two days later, however, the Bruins rebounded with a 72-39 victory over the Oakmont Vikings to remain tied with the Marysville Indians for second place in the Pioneer Valley League (PVL). Last night, 2/12, after our deadline for this week’s edition, the Bruins played the Wheatland Pirates, another team they had whipped 52-20 earlier in the season. Tomorrow night, in their last game of the regular season, the Bruins will travel to play the squad leading the PVL, the Colfax Falcons. They will have to win both games to be certain of moving on to postseason competition.
Chester Volcanos: After being defeated by a strong Quincy Trojans team last Thursday, 2/6, the Volcanos bested the Los Molinos Bulldogs by a score of 58-45 on Tuesday, 2/11. Tonight, 2/13, they close their season at home against the Redding Christian Lions, the team who beat them 45-40 on 1/28. By reversing this outcome, they will place third in the Five StarLeague and earn a playoff berth.
Colfax Falcons: Last night (again, after our deadline), the Falcons took an eleven-game win streak into their game against the Oakmont Vikings, a unit they trampled on 1/22 by a score of 79-38. Tomorrow night, 2/14, the Falcons close their regular season against the Bear River Bruins. Whether they win or lose, the team is assured of winning the PVL championship before moving on to the Sac-Joaquin Division 3 playoffs.
Lassen Grizzlies: With losses to the University Prep Panthers (46-73) and Yreka Miners (57-71) over the past week, Susanville’s Grizzlies will face the Central Valley Falcons tomorrow night, 2/14, at Shasta Lake in their final game of the season. Having beaten this team (at home) by a score of 62-21, the odds of closing out the year with a “W” look good.
Loyalton Grizzlies: Having been on the road this past week while beating the Sierra Lutheran Falcons (41-29) and Paradise Adventist Academy Cougars (58-33), Loyalton’s Grizzlies will be at home tomorrow night, 2/14, to play the Princeton Eagles. Having beaten this team by only three points during their 1/31 game, the Grizzlies know they will need a strong performance to hold first place in the Pioneer League.
Modoc Braves: Following a 35-47 loss to the Weed Cougars on Saturday, 2/8, the Braves clobbered the Mt. Shasta Bears 62-22 on Tuesday, 2/11. Last night, 2/12 (after our paper went to press), the team hosted the Etna Lions, a squad they beat easily (64-27) on 1/24. Tonight, 2/13, the Braves will host the Fall River Bulldogs, a team they edged out by a score of 39-31 back in mid-January. Whatever happens in these games, the odds of the Braves moving on to post-season play are excellent.
Nevada Union Miners: Last Thursday evening, 2/6, the Miners traveled to play the Roseville Tigers and lost the game, 26-41. Tonight, 2/13, in their last contest of the season, the Miners hope their home-team advantage works to reverse the 31-41 loss the Yuba City Honkers handed them in Yuba City back on 1/22.
Plumas Charter Warriors:After edging out the Loyaltpn Grizzlies by a score of 39-37, the Warriors had won five out of their last six games. Last night, after our deadline, the Warriors faced the CORE Butte Lynx, a 3-12 team coming into the contest after losing their previous three games.
Portola Tigers: Over the last week, the Tigers picked up solid victories against the Biggs Wolverines (56-49) and Hamilton Braves (53-33) to gain a firm grip on third place in the Mid-Valley League (MVL). With only two games remaining in the regular season, both against the weakest teams in their Mid-Valley League, we are confident the Tigers are bound for at least one playoff game.
Quincy Trojans: With a 1.5-game lead in the MVL over the second-place Biggs Wolverines and the Trojans at home tomorrow night to play the 6-19 Hamilton Braves in their last regular season game, the team appears to have a lock on winning the MVL championship before and a high seed in the post-season playoffs.
Truckee Wolverines: Having lost to both the South Tahoe Vikings (46-7) and the Hug Hawks (42-26) over the last week, the Wolverines finished their season with a 4-12 won-loss record and placed next to last in Nevada’s 3A Northern-West League.
