With the high school baseball season in full swing, all local teams still have at least some chance to make the playoffs held in May. Here are the results from games played since last week’s deadline for this paper:
Bear River Bruins: Last week, after the Marysville Indians used two unearned runs to beat the Bruins 2-1 on 4/2 and the Oakmont Vikings outscored the Bruins 14-1 on 4/3, Bear River rebounded with an 8-3 victory against the Marysville Indians behind another strong (only two hits and one unearned run surrendered over six innings) performance by junior Kaden Nicolls.
Chester Volcanos: Since our last report, the Volcanos pounded the Burney Raiders 18-11 on 4/3, with junior Grady Klemik collecting four hits and six runs batted in during five at-bats. However, on 4/8, junior Reilly Vaughan of the Quincy Trojans quietened the Volcanos’ bats, and Chester was outscored 8-3.
Colfax Falcons: On 4/3, the Falcons saw their three-game winning streak end when the Wheatland Pirates outscored Colfax 8-6. However, on the following day, 4/4, the Falcons (at home) edged out a 5-3 victory over the Pirates to retain third place in the Pioneer Valley League. Yesterday, after our deadline, the Falcons began a two-game series against the PVL’s first-place team, the Oakmont Vikings.
Lassen Grizzlies: The Grizzlies won two of the three games they played since our last edition and are now tied for second place in their conference. Given the relatively weak records of their upcoming league opponents this month, the odds of the Grizzlies remaining near the top of their ladder are good.
Loyalton Grizzlies: With a record of 4-6 during non-conference games, the Grizzlies will begin competing for the Evergreen League championship today, 4/10, at home against the 0-6 Dunsmuir Tigers.
Modoc Braves: On Monday, 4/7, the Braves traveled to Oregon to play the Lakeview Honkers in a non-conference game and were edged by a score of 2-1. Tomorrow, the now 8-2 Braves will travel to play two games against the 1-8 Trinity Wolves.
Nevada Union Miners: Xavier Deniz’s bat cooled off while the Miners were outscored 18-10 in three losses to the Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos since our last edition. Fortunately, the Miners broke this losing streak earlier this week behind seven innings of four-hit pitching by junior Ty Malak.
Placer Hillmen: After trouncing the Pioneer Patriots, 11-3, on 4/3, the Hillmen faced the tough Oakmont Vikings the following day and lost 1-7. However, on Monday of this week, the Hillmen rebounded with a 15-4 rout of the Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos, the same team they faced yesterday, 4/9, after our deadline. We will report the result of this game and the one they are playing today, 4/10, against the Raging Rhinos in next week’s paper.
Plumas Charter Warriors: The team steamrolled the Burney Raiders, 18-0, on 4/4, and then stretched their winning streak to three games with a 6-2 victory over the Portola Tigers on Tuesday, 4/8. Today, 4/10, the Warriors travel to Tule Lake for a doubleheader, hoping to take both games and move their season record to 8 wins and seven losses.
Portola Tigers: Since our last paper, the Tigers lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Maxwell Panthers, 0-10 and 2-5. on 4/2 before losing (2-6) to the Plumas Charter Warriors on 4/8. Thus, the Tigers will be looking to end a three-game winless streak when they travel tomorrow, 4/11, to play a doubleheader against the Hamilton Braves.
Quincy Trojans: On 4/8, the Trojans hosted the Chester Volcanos and, after losing to Chester on 3/25 by 23-7, the Trojans won by the score of 6-1, mainly because of the excellent pitching of Reilly Vaughn (5 innings pitched, 11 strikeouts, and only two hits).
Truckee Wolverines: On 4/2, after our deadline for last week’s paper, the Wolverines’ six-game win streak was halted with a 6-7 loss to the North Valleys Panthers. Since this defeat, however, the Wolverines have twice clobbered the Hug Hawks (16-4 and 18-0) and easily dismissed the Wooster Colts (9-3) to retain sole possession of first place in their 3A North West League.
