Sheriff’s Blotter

October 23, 2024

Monday, October 14

01:34 - Accidental 911 in Calpine.

04:54 - Tree blocking the highway near Bee Ranch removed by Caltrans. I do believe the hardworking folks in bright orange are placed in more precarious situations than most in these parts while keeping our roads clear. It’s the time of year when hubby and I hold hands every mornin’ and pray to the good Lord that He keeps everyone safe driving the roads and those maintaining them. And if a tree must fall, may it fall at a time and place in an propitious manner.

08:28 - Hunters safety course at Loyalton Elementary School may involve fake gunfire. It’s been said, “My biggest fear is that when I die, my wife will sell my hunting gear for what I said I paid for it.”

12:12 - Missing person report stemmed from family miscommunication. It happens. On occasion, this also happens at my house. Usually, someone is looking at their cell phone instead of the person speaking. Good times!

13:23 - Accidental 911 in Loyalton.

16:47 - Deputy gave citizen lift to Reno.

Tuesday, October 15

09:21 - Fire drill day at Downieville School.

09:30 - Hikers near Volcano Lake (off Sardine Lake Road, I had to Google), spotted a recently extinguished illegal campfire and attributed the idiocy to the owners of nearby vehicles. Evidence proving any theory came up short.

10:40 - Law Enforcement shooting it up at the range behind the Loyalton Transfer Site. Recertification time.

12:50 - Dog loose in Downieville. An old-timer once told me that in earlier days, dogs were running everywhere, all over town, all the time—consequently, fewer bear problems.

15:37 - Possible abandoned vehicle on Maiden Lane in Downieville.

17:03 - Sierra County resident close to the Camptonville area passed away from what appears to be natural causes. Condolences.

17:37 - CHP handling a non-injury crash on Highway 49, mile marker 2.36.

19:51 - Sierra County Road Department to the rescue! Crew removing downed tree on Ridge Road near Pike. Right there’s a great group of folks who work tirelessly year round keeping county roads in check!

Friday, October 18

07:32 - What the dickens? Bizarre situation indeed! Four out-of-town juveniles mistook a residence for the library the previous night. At 7:44 p.m? One opens the screen door and realizes...OOPS? Then runs off! I understand Guffin is hosting a library night here and there, but this seems odd! Yep! That’s their story, and they’re sticking to it!

09:37 - Cell phone found on Highway 49 near Celestial Valley.

10:05 - Illegal burn extinguished Northside of Longhorn area.

12:20 - CHP on cow herding patrol near Sattley.

14:02 - Big thank you to one involved in the Downieville Main Street- Roommate drama saga for executing wisdom in calling the non-emergency line (530-289-3700) to air grievances and concerns. While I’m giddy in attending court tomorrow to hopefully witness a judge bring this circus to a close, maybe the bench will make some spirited comments at the ridiculousness of it all (our town is too tiny for this ongoing unnecessary drama). May sanity be restored to the lives of the dispatchers at the Sheriff’s Office, hell, everyone at the SO. Unfortunately, popcorn is not allowed inside the courtroom. Though this one time, they should make an exception!

15:29 - Workout equipment; a kettlebell was reportedly stolen from a Loyalton front porch. Now those things ain’t cheap! Shame, shame!

17:07 - Sierraville School property checked by deputy. All good.

18:17 - Concern over smells indicative of drug use or manufacturing permeating the area thanks to neighbor’s activities reported by Loyalton caller. The aromas are attributed to spilled paint thinner. Okie dokie.

11:44 - Forest Service reports what was thought to be explosives near a mine around Camptonville appears to be a battery pack left by road workers.

12:37 - Deer tag validation request near Sierraville.

13:09 - Driving on a suspended license in Sierraville resulted in vehicle impoundment.

13:46 - Deputy assists citizen with completing ABC license form- how about tax forms? Can they help with that? How about my kids’ math homework? Momma tried.

16:03 - Dog bite in Calpine. Medical not needed.

18:19 - Ambulance requested in Loyalton.

19:37 - Downieville residents have had their fill with dogs on Commercial Street barking at all hours of day and night. More than one source put a bug in my ear that hotel guests are up and leaving because they can’t even get a good night’s sleep! Citations are to be issued! Remember, our county is without animal control thanks to strapped finances. If you want to pay for an animal control officer, be my guest. In the meantime, the Sheriff is working on it!

19:50 - Deputy did not find speeding car as reported in Loyalton. Periodic checks through the area will continue into the night.

20:55 - DUI arrest made near Vinton. Appears the individual did not learn the first time round. You can lead a horse to water but can’t make ‘em drink!

Sunday, October 20

11:06 - Apparently, a lapse in judgment ensued, and compromising photos sent off into the ether provided an irresistible opportunity for the malevolent, and a blackmailer demanded money or else! Caller referred to their local agencies. FBI may get involved.
