Sheriff’s Blotter

September 4, 2024

Monday, August 26

11:16 - Downieville bear attempted to break into a dumpster.

11:40 - Citizen assist in Loyalton.

13:26 - Report of reckless driver near Camptonville.

13:33 - Sierra Brooks caller reports illegal dumping near Rotary Grounds.

13:58 - Sierra City resident reports computer scam involving Pay Pal. Side note: I had a voice message from “Wells Fargo.” The message said there was unusual activity on my bank account, and they were issuing me a new card. Looked at my account — only the usual Amazon, JADAA’s, St. Charles, and Lost Nugget purchases. Instead of calling the number provided on the machine, I called the Wells Fargo number on the back of my ATM card. Banker’s tip: If you get a call like this, don’t give out any personal information, drop off the call, then call the bank with the number on your statement or the back of your card and let them review your account. Hackers and scammers are crafty bastards! Consumers need to up their game!

23:04 - Deputy looking for burglary suspect near Hallelujah Junction.

Tuesday, August 27

06:35 - Utility issue in Downieville. Hey this is the call I made! I called the non-emergency number to report a broken sprinkler head on the Community Hall lawn — enough water flowing into the street to fill a well in Africa. I will say our water department team is on top of issues as soon as they are reported!

08:11 - Cow in the road near the Plumas County line. Moooo-ve it bovine!

10:50 - Cows are conspiring — Sierra Brooks cows are in the road!

11:04 - Now cows in other parts of Loyalton decide to make a break for it!

11:49 - Ambulance request in Loyalton.

15:29 - Civil issue at Sixteen to One mine in Alleghany.

21:02 - Loyalton: “The Sheriff’s Office received around 200 (911) calls from a child that had access to an old cell phone. A Deputy made contact with the guardian of the juvenile and explained the importance of only calling 911 when there is an emergency.” I confirmed this child was indeed a youngin’ and probably had no idea what pushing those buttons was doing!

Wednesday, August 28

07:40 - Report of theft from a Sierra City construction site.

07:52 - Sierra City incident involving an aggressive dog was reported.

08:49 - Caltans notified of large boulder on highway near Downieville.

12:27 - Juvenile issue in Loyalton.

08:14 - Plumas County Animal Control notified of a dog in their area causing traffic hazards.

10:29 - Loyalton welfare check request ends on a good note.

10:30 - Verbal altercation ensued between two possibly intoxicated individuals. Last night, I cracked open a bottle of Ole Smoky pumpkin-flavored moonshine. Wanting to give the readers my very best on this Blotter this morning (and thanks for the kind words, Mr. Lane Frank!), I refrained from consuming more than two shots...before intoxication!

12:45 - Theft reported around cabins in Sierra City.

16:16 - Appears a Downieville fire hydrant was run into and possibly leaking water.

18:21 - Unlike the cows, sheep on a Sattley road apparently decided to vanish before the law arrived. You may know that bison and buffalo are considered bovine...but did you know that sheep and goats are also lumped into the bovine group? Glad I researched before I wrote this entry.

18:46 - Sierraville driver cited for no proof of auto insurance.

19:06 - Mountain lion sighting at a Sierra City residence.

19:12 - Downieville: “Deputy and the Road Department were able to assist a resident with the removal of a fresh mountain lion kill of a deer.” Concerns were raised about the safety of children in the area.

19:21 - Suspicious person hanging around the Loyalton Cemetery was arrested with priors. Flashback: My 18-year-old was reflecting on a daycare experience when the center took all the kids to a picnic lunch at a nearby cemetery. Her interjections are too colorful to print, but basically, what she said was, “Who does that? Who takes a bunch of kids to eat their lunch on the graves of the dead?” I don’t know, kid. I just don’t know. But apparently, the daycare I chose for you, my dear!

20:12 - Shots fired near Loganville. Due to fire restrictions, deputy will do checks throughout the night.

14:40 - Loyalton Cemetery: “Report of possible illegal camping. Deputies found that there is nothing stating that the subject is not authorized to camp in the area he is camping. Therefore, no crime has been committed.” With all the forest around, if this is where you desire to camp... well, I’m just going to sip my coffee. I’ve watched entirely too many scary movies!

15:18 - Multiple bears seem to visit a particular Loyalton porch. As with all wildlife concerns, Fish and Wildlife were notified.

21:49 - Deputy admonished Loyalton dirt biker driving recklessly.

Saturday, August 31

01:25 - Sierra City resident reports suspicious activity and then states “that he might have seen things that were not there.” With terrible night vision, I can mistake a tree stump for a bear, a stack of pillows and hanging clothes for a serial killer who invaded my house (which almost gave me heart attack), a splash of a darkened piece of wood on the wall for a large spider...I get it!

05:57 - CHP will handle abandoned wrecked vehicle near Sierraville.
