Pretend It’s a Forest

October 10, 2024

As we’ve learned, temperature no longer obeys its designated seasonal boundaries. And while I’ve been enjoying these extended summer days by the river, we might be seeing the last warm weekend of the season — unless Mother Nature has other plans.

One of the things I’ve noticed with the shift from summer to fall is that our temporary residents, who became friends, have already left us with the promise of returning next season. Businesses are starting to switch back to winter hours, and we’re slowly drifting toward the sleepy Downieville that welcomed us last year.

While I’m ready to swap these shorts for a more fashionable look, there are a few things I have to do before the season officially changes — weather permitting, of course.

One last river jump. Cold plunges were once a questionable method used in psychiatric hospitals to treat mental health issues, but lately, they’ve become trendy among high-performing athletes — which, in my opinion, requires a bit of insanity to perform at that level. Yet, I can’t help but feel happy every time I do it. So, maybe there’s something to it.

Cleaning the chimney. After learning the hard way that you’re supposed to clean it regularly (how would I know?), this task has moved high up on my priority list. So, if you see me in town, please share your recommendations.

A hike. While the trails and nature aren’t going anywhere with the change of seasons, I’d love to keep exploring Sierra County without the constant fear of slipping, falling, and, well, dying.

One last patio supper. As dramatic as it might sound, the thought of not having a meal and a drink while overlooking the river is already triggering my seasonal affective disorder.

While I’m ready to trade the smell of sweaty mountain bikers for the crisp, fresh air of the mountains, I’m looking forward to next summer in our county. But for now — locals, old-timers, newcomers, tourists, and visitors from other galaxies — let’s pretend that while saying goodbye to summer is inevitable, there are still things to look forward to: like the bugs finally going away and the iconic return of a classic hot toddy.
