Local Girls Basketball

January 24, 2025

Here are the most recent results for the local high school girls basketball teams:

Bear River Bruins: Over the past week, the Bruins bested the Lincoln Fighting Zebras, 64-32, and the Oakmont Vikings, 78-53, to take their season record to 12 wins and six losses and a tie for second place in the Pioneer Valley League (PVL) with the Marysville Indians. Last night, after our weekly deadline, the Bruins traveled to play the 1-13 Wheatland Pirates. This Friday they will be hosting the Colfax Falcons with a chance to gain a tie for first place in the PVL.

Chester Volcanos: Last Thursday evening, the Volcanos were on the road to overcome the Portola Tigers, 40-29, in a bruising battle. Results from the Volcano’s subsequent games against the CORE Butte Lynx, Dunsmuir Tigers, and Princeton will appear in next week’s edition.

Colfax Falcons: With solid victories against the Marysville Indians (67-42) and Center Cougars (78-26) last week, the Falcons secured first place in the PVL. The team defended this lead on the road when facing the 14-5 Oakmont Vikings last night (after our deadline). Then, tomorrow night, they travel again to go up against another strong team, the Bear River Bruins, the second place team in the PVL.

Lassen Grizzlies: This past week, not unexpectedly, the Grizzlies of Susanville lost 36-59 to Redding’s University Prep Panthers. Then the team delivered their season’s highest score while losing 62-72 to the Yreka Miners. Next, with a 6-12 record, the team will be favored when they host the 3-14 Central Valley Falcons tomorrow night.

Loyalton Grizzlies: After beating both the Elk Creek Elks (63-30) and the Plumas Charter Warriors (41-35) over the past week, these Grizzlies hosted the Los Molinos Bulldogs last night. We will report the results of this game next Thursday.

Modoc Braves: With solid victories against the Trinity Wolves (47-35) and the Weed Cougars (47-32) over the past week, the Braves have now won 12 of their last 13 games. Next, this hot team will be favored when they take on the 7-12 Etna Lions tomorrow evening and the 2-15 Mt. Shasta Bears on Tuesday, 1/28.

Nevada Union Miners: Last week, the woes of the Miners continued with defeats handed to them by the Roseville Tigers (29-39) and the Granite Bay Grizzlies (31-66). We will report the results of the Miners’ game last night against the Yuba City Honkers (a unit without a win in their previous nine games) in our Jan. 30 edition.

Portola Tigers: With injuries and illnesses bringing the team’s roster down to six players, the Tigers lost, 29-40, to the Chester Volcanos last Thursday evening, to the Quincy Trojans, 38-46, last Friday, and to the Biggs Wolverines, 42-53, on Tuesday of this week. The team hopes to staunch this losing streak when playing the relatively weak Hamilton Braves, Maxwell Panthers, and Virginia City Muckers.

Plumas Charter Warriors: The Warriors beat the Princeton Eagles, 35-31, on 1/15 to build a three-game winning streak. However, two nights later, the Warriors lost, 35-41, to the Loyalton Grizzlies. The Warriors’ next game, next Tuesday evening, will be against the Elk Creek Elks, a team the Warriors beat by a score of 60-21 on 1/13.

Quincy Trojans: Last Friday night, led by seniors Jenna Peay and Hana Hostetter, who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, and sophomore Skylar McCarthy with 13 rebounds, the Trojans beat the Portola Tigers by a score of 46-38. Then, on Tuesday night of this week, the team skated by the Maxwell Panthers (62-11) and secured first place in their Mid-Valley League.

Truckee Wolverines: Beaten 24-54 by the formidable North Valleys Panthers on 1/15, the team’s record took another hit with a 33-41 loss against the Hug Hawks of Reno on Friday, 1/17. Our next edition will find the results of their 1/21 game against the South Tahoe Vikings, their 1/24 contest against the Wooster Colts, and their match-up with the Sparks Railroaders on 1/29.
