Local Girls Basketball

January 16, 2025

With the pre-conference games behind them, the region’s girl’s basketball teams have begun vying for their league’s championship. Here are their most recent results:

Bear River Bruins: During the first week of Pioneer Valley League (PVL) competition, the Bruins lost to the Marysville Indians, 48-60, before trouncing the Center Cougars of Antelope, 48-20, and the Mira Loma Matadors of Sacramento, 83-8. Next, last night after the paper’s deadline, the team hosted the Lincoln Fighting Zebra, a group tied with the Bruins for third place in the PVL.

Chester Volcanos: In their first Five Star League game against the Burney Raiders on Jan. 14, the Volcanos could not stop the Raiders’ high-scoring freshwoman Aaliyah Perez. Her 31 points led the way to the Volcanos 52-61 loss. Tonight, the now 9-4 Volcanos will face another formidable opponent, the 10-6 Portola Tigers, and the results will appear in our Jan. 16 paper.

Colfax Falcons: Having been victors in their first three PVL games, the 11-6 Falcons faced the 12-4 Marysville Indians last night, Jan. 15 (after the paper’s deadline), in a battle between the two first-place teams in the PVL. Tomorrow night, they will take on the weak Center Cougars in Antelope.

Lassen Grizzlies: Early this week, on Jan. 14, the Grizzlies of Susanville easily outscored the Anderson Cubs, 60-41. Tomorrow night, the team travels to Redding to play the 14-1 University Prep Panthers, a team that is now tied for first place in the Northern League.

Loyalton Grizzlies: After traveling to play the Quincy Trojans on Jan. 8 for a non-league, 24-46, loss, the Grizzlies hosted the Elk Creek Elks last night (after our deadline). We will publish the results of this league game and their contest against the Plumas Charter Warriors tomorrow night in our next edition.

Modoc Braves: Over the past week, the Braves beat the Hoopa Valley Warriors (66-52) and, in their first Shasta Cascade League game, the Fall River Bulldogs (39-31). Thus, having won 10 of their last 11 games, the Braves will be confident but wary when hosting Weaverville’s strong (13-4) Trinity Wolves.

Nevada Union Miners: Last week, on Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Miners beat a weak Del Campo Cougars by the score of 58-24. However, the Placer Hillmen and Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos bested the Miners by scores of 52-44 and 52-44, respectively, on Jan. 10 and Jan. 13. We will report the results of the Miner’s games against Roseville Tigers (last night) and the Granite Bay Grizzlies in our Jan. 23 edition.

Portola Tigers: After skating over the Williams Yellowjackets earlier this week, the 10-6 Tigers will host the 9-4 Chester Volcanos tonight and the 10-4 Quincy Tigers tomorrow evening. Next Tuesday, Jan. 21, the Tigers travel to compete against the Biggs Wolverines, a team with a 14-3 record as of this week’s deadline.

Plumas Charter Warriors: The Warriors took a two-game winning streak into their post-deadline game against the Princeton Eagles last night. In our next edition, we will report the result of this contest and the Warriors’ game against the Loyalton Grizzlies tomorrow night.

Quincy Trojans: Having won eight of their last ten games, the 10-4 Trojans travel to play the Portola Tigers tomorrow night. Then, next Tuesday, Jan. 21, the Trojans will host the Maxwell Panthers, a team they have already beaten twice this season.

Truckee Wolverines: Unbeaten in 2025 after wins against the Sparks Railroaders and Reno’s Wooster Colts, the 4-4 Wolverines went up against the 11-3 North Valleys Panthers of Reno last night (after our weekly deadline). Again, the results of this game and those against the Hug Hawks and South Tahoe Vikings on January 17 and January 21, respectively, will be found in our next edition.
