With 2024 behind them, here’s where our region’s girl’s basketball teams are standing as 2025 begins:

Bear River Bruins: With an 8-5 record, the Bruins traveled to Marysville on Wednesday, Jan. 8, to begin playing their Pioneer Valley League opponents. the Bruins lost to the Canon City (Colorado) Tigers by a score of 45-65. The remainder of their games (during the regular season) will be against other members of the Pioneer Valley League.

Chester Volcanos: With an 8-3 record after trouncing the Princeton Eagles, 49-31, on Jan. 6, the Volcanos faced the 1-7 Dunsmuir Tigers late in the afternoon of Jan. 8, after our deadline for this week’s edition. So, the results, along with the outcome of their first Five Star League game against the Burney Raiders on Jan. 14., will appear in our Jan. 16 paper.

Colfax Falcons: The Falcons were beaten 60-55 on Jan. 4 when the St. Frances Lancers of Mountain View visited Colfax. However, seniors Juliette James, with 14 points and eight rebounds, Kaia Diederichs, with 12 points and seven rebounds, and junior Madalyn Sigrist, with 16 points, did well against the now 11-1 Lancers. Coming next, on 1/10, the team hosts the Wheatland Pirates for the first of their twelve Pioneer Valley League games.

Lassen Grizzlies: After dropping all three games during a Jan. 3 tournament, the team’s woes continued with a 48-63 loss to the West Valley Eagles in their first Northern League game on Jan. 7. Next up, the 5-10 Grizzlies of Susanville will be looking to end their 5-game losing streak when they face the 8-8 Anderson Cubs, at home, on Jan. 14.

Loyalton Grizzlies: These Grizzlies returned to competition after a nearly three-week holiday break, with a 4-6 record when they traveled to play the Quincy Trojans on Jan. 8. Again, since the game will take place after our deadline for this week’s edition, next week’s paper will carry the results.

Modoc Braves: This week, on Jan. 7, led by juniors Katie Erquiaga (14 points and 13 rebounds) and Jordyn Stanage (15 points and seven steals), the Braves posted a 49-30 victory over the Bonanza (Oregon) Antlers. However, this young team (eight of their 11 players have at least two more years before they graduate) broke a three-game losing streak this past Tuesday with a solid 52-24 victory against the Paradise Adventist Academy Cougars. This Friday, Jan. 10, they face the Elk Creek Elks and look forward to remaining unbeaten in their Freelance League.

Quincy Trojans: Having won their last five games and finishing 2024 with a 7-2 record, the Trojans hosted the Loyalton Grizzlies on Wednesday, Jan. 8, shortly after our weekly deadline.
