Last Saturday, 9/21, two unbeaten teams, the Loyalton Grizzlies and the Chester Volcanos, met at Loyalton High School for a game played under a blazing hot sun. Despite the dry heat, the teams gave each other plenty of hard knocks before the Grizzlies translated a 13-0 half-time lead into a 20-6 victory. This week the Grizzlies will travel on Saturday to Santa Rosa for a 1 PM game against Roseland University Prep Knights, another team with a 3-0 record. Having outscored their opponents 160-40 while building this record, the Knights are certain to give the Grizzlies defense a strong test.

Unfortunately, on last Friday evening, the Quincy Trojans saw their undefeated season end with a 28-20 loss tothe Anderson Cubs after the Cubs’ strong ground game (four rushing touchdowns) and a couple of long passes, overcame the three touchdown passes thrown by the Trojans’ quarterback, Will Rich. This week, on Friday, the Nevada Union Miners will journey to Sacramento for a 7:30 PM game against the Del Campo Cougars, a team with a 4-1 record who are coming off a 42-7 loss on 9/20 to Auburn’s Placer Hillmen (who are now 5-0 and hosting the 2-2 Roseville Tigers tomorrow night).

Meanwhile, with Juniors McCallum, Pritchett, and Eelkema combining to rush for 394 yards and 8 touchdowns, the Miners took their season’s record to 4-1 with a decisive, 63-19, victory at home over the River Valley Falcons of Yuba City last Friday.

As for the Bear River Bruins, the team’s unbeaten streak ended last Friday with a 27-7 loss to Wheatland. Tomorrow, 9/27 at 7:15 PM, they will take their 3-1 record into a home game against the 3-1 Oakmont Vikings.

Last Friday, the Truckee Wolverines traveled to Nevada and extended their unbeaten record to 5-0 with a hard fought 17-7 win against the Fernley Vaqueros. This week the Wolverines will be facing the Churchill County Greenwave (3-2), another team with a potent rushing offense and a strong defense.

The Chester Volcanos, after their scrappy performance in Loyalton, return home for a 6 PM confrontation tomorrow night, 9/27, with the Hayfork Timberjacks (Trinity County), a team which has outscored its opponents, 172-22, while building a 3-0 record in the 2024 season.

The Lumberjacks of Westwood High, still seeking their first win for the year, are traveling to northwestern Lassen County (Bieber) to play the Big Valley Cardinals tomorrow at 6 PM. The last time these two teams met, back on 9/6, the Cardinals (now 3-1) took a lopsided, 64-36, win home with them.

The Feather River College Eagles, also looking forward to winning a game this season, will be at home on Saturday, 9/28 at 1 PM, to face the College of Sequoias Giants. This will be a formidable task, with a 2-1 record, the Sequoias are coming to Quincy with the confidence bred from a 58-7 thrashing of the weak (0-3) San Joaquin Delta Mustangs last Saturday. Will the long bus ride from Visalia sap some of this energy?
