Baseball has always been my favorite sport, and I played for teams in Little League, Pony League, and through high school. So, following the local baseball teams this spring will bring back many fond memories. Here’s what we know now about the current status of our local baseball teams:
Bear River Bruins: With five straight victories to start their season, the Bruins are off to an excellent start in the 2025 season. During these games, the team outscored their opponents 27-5, and their pitching staff hurled three shutouts. Thus, the Bruins look certain to be contenders for winning their Pioneer Valley League championship.
Chester Volcanos: The Volcanos lost their first two games of the season. However, they recovered nicely by winning their next three contests with an average margin of 13 runs. The team’s mettle will be tested next week when they host the Quincy Trojans next Tuesday, 3/25, and travel to play the Portola Tigers on Wednesday, 3/26.
Colfax Falcons: Yesterday, 3/19, the Falcons took a 5-2 record into their home game against the Lincoln Fighting Zebras. In our next edition, we will report on this game, their away game against the Zebras on 3/21, and their contest on the road with the Bishop Manoque Miner on 3/25.
Lassen Grizzlies: After splitting a two-game series with the North Valleys Panthers in Reno on 3/1, the Grizzlies were shut out, 0-9, during their 3/6 game against the Chico Panthers. The following day, 3/7, the team played two games, beating the Orland Trojans (10-3) and losing to the Del Norte Warriors in a pitching duel (0-1). On 3/8, the Grizzlies finished the neutral tournament by defeating the Golden Valley Cougars of Merced, 8-3, to level their season’s win-loss record at 3-3.
Loyalton Grizzlies: During their first three games of the season, Loyalton’s Grizzlies lost close contests against the Quincy Trojans, 5-6, and the Mt. Shasta Bears, 2-3, before edging out the Portola Tigers, 2-0. Next, the team played a doubleheader on 3/11 against the Biggs Wolverines, winning another nail-biter in the first game by the score of 4-3 and being blown out in the second match, 5-15. So, they will take a 2-3 record into the tournament they’ll participate in tomorrow and Saturday.
Modoc Braves: The Braves opened their season on 3/1 by splitting a two-game series on the road with the Quincy Trojans, losing the first game, 2-13, and winning the second, 15-7. Then, on 3/6, the team swept the Tule Lake Honkers at home by scores of 10-0 and 10-1. So, they’ll take a 3-1 record into today’s tournament against Quincy and Biggs.
Nevada Union Miners: Winning seven out of their first nine games, the Miners are 3-0 so far in the Foothill Valley League, and their chances for winning their league’s championship this year look promising.
Placer Hillmen: With a 4-4 record thus far this season and 20 games left on their schedule, the Hillmen have plenty of chances to make a run for the Pioneer Valley League title.
Plumas Charter Warriors: In their first five games of the 2025 season, the Warriors won two games and lost three. This young team must gel quickly to compete with the Loyalton Grizzlies, Tule Lake Honkers, and Dunsmuir Tigers for first place in the Evergreen League championship.
Portola Tigers: After beating the Virginia City Muckers (15-0) and losing to Reno’s Hug Hawks (4-5) on 3/1, the Tigers beat the Burney Raiders (6-3) and the Anderson Cubs (14-0) on 3/8. Their two-game winning streak came to a close on 3/8, however, with a 0-2 loss to Loyalton. Next up for the Tigers, the Chester Volcano will come to Portola on 3/26.
Quincy Trojans: This past Monday, 3/17, the 4-2 Trojans were slated to play a doubleheader against Loyalton. Unfortunately, the games were canceled due to stormy weather. Today, 3/20, the 4-1 Modoc Braves will visit Quincy in a very competitive match-up.
Truckee Wolverines: Despite outscoring their opponents 62-57 during their first seven games of the 2025 season, the Wolverines will bring a 2-5 win-loss record to their game against Reno’s strong Wooster Colts today. Fortunately for the Wolverines, their schedule for the remainder of March will be against weaker teams, the Sparks Railroaders and the South Tahoe Vikings.
