SIERRA COUNTY — John “Jason” LaChance was sworn in as Sierra County Superior Court Judge this morning, January 6th, by current presiding judge Charles H. Ervin. He will serve alongside Ervin, giving Sierra County its second full-time judge and rounding out the Sierra County Superior Court’s 2-seat bench.

The ceremony in Downieville was attended by around 40 people in the Sierra County Courthouse, with several more viewing online via Zoom. After donning the judge’s robe for the first time and swearing the oath of office, LaChance gave an emotional speech thanking his family, supporters, and voters. He assured county residents that he would be working in service of all, regardless of who one may have voted for in the judge election. LaChance also expressed that taking on responsibility, particularly over others, is what gives life meaning, as demonstrated to him by his parents. He gave special thanks to his wife, Jaime, and his two daughters, as well as to his long-time law partner, Brent Collinson.

Raised in a small Wisconsin town, LaChance was licensed as an attorney in 2004 and started a law partnership in 2013 with Brent Collinson in Truckee. Before the election in March, LaChance secured 30 judicial endorsements in addition to dozens from local community members. He was elected in the March 5th primary election with over 60% of the vote. Of the election results, he said, “This county invested in me, and now it’s my turn to invest in you, and I promise you that as your judicial officer.” LaChance will serve a six-year term, expiring in 2031.
