DOWNIEVILLE — Though leaving the house was difficult on Saturday due to the heat, those who made it to Main Street in the evening were treated to an incredible show by the band “Sunday Paper.” Led by Santana bassist David Margen, the ensemble featured some of the most experienced musicians ever to have played in Downieville. Artists the members of Sunday Paper have played with include Sly and the Family Stone, Jefferson Starship, Herbie Hancock, Joe Walsh from The Eagles, Gregg Allman, Cold Blood, Tower of Power, Jorge Santana, and, of course, Carlos Santana.

In a 3-hour set with an intermission, the band played soul and funk hits, including Jessica by The Allman Brothers Band to start the night, September by Earth, Wind & Fire, Oye Como Va by Santana, and the fan-requested Suavecito by Malo. John Marin fronted the group with his exceptional vocals and percussion, intermittently playing great saxophone parts. Keyboardist Tony Stead and guitarist Peter Margen provided backup with some wonderful solos, while drummer T. Moran and bassist David Margen kept the rhythm going flawlessly all evening. Local guitarist and singer Paul Lesniak also joined the band for a few songs, which was a highly enjoyable feature.

The dance party, which had a $10 entry fee, was a charitable event benefiting the Downieville Fire Department. Sunday Paper very generously donated its services. The event was sponsored by the Sierra County Arts Council, and the Sierra Shangri-La graciously provided rooms for the artists.

Although Sierra County is home to many outstanding artists and good music is easy to find, Sunday Paper was something special. The band brought a developed, professional, and experienced sound to Downieville that could easily have been on a recording. It’s no wonder these musicians have played with the greats of soul and funk — they embody the genres. We hope they return next year!
