Encouraged by bird expert friend, Chris, I visited Wild Bird Crossing in Bridgehampton to immerse myself in the world of bird feeders and chow for these little critters. I was overwhelmed by the variety of feeders and concoctions available and by the knowledge of the man behind the counter, Charlie “the Bird Man.” He was experienced in providing advice to novices like myself and I left with three Squirrel Buster feeders and various hulled sunflower mixes. The trunk of my Jag is practically full.
Chris has promised to stop over to help me put the feeders together and decide where best to place them throughout our property. But I think these little guys know what I am up to—there seems to be an increase in the number of birds flying around my house since I bought the feed. Not just the usual blue jays and robins, but cardinals, song sparrows, goldfinches, warblers, chickadees and starlings. I already have several bird houses located throughout the yard, but this influx is more than usual. I know they must have gotten the word from Charlie that there is a feast coming at Ackerman’s. I called Chris again.
I am concerned that these little guys will start chipping away the paint job on my old Jag. As I write this, I hear them loudly chirping away. I can almost decipher what they are saying, pleading with me to open one of the bags of sunflower seeds for a morning brunch. Chris promises to come by this afternoon. It’s coming guys, be patient.
