Election Day on My Mind

October 30, 2024

I took an early walk along the shoreline this morning. For the first time in many months, I could not finish reading the New York Times election coverage. I am done. I have made every effort to understand the pros and cons of both sides and have already voted. But there is not a conversation among friends at social gatherings that does not touch on political issues raised in this election. Even among close friends these discussions have to be handled delicately as opinions are so sharply divided, especially when the support for one or the other candidate veers into the personal attacks that have been so frequently thrown around. We can disagree on issues, but the verbal assaults, such as accusations that the opponent is “unhinged,” do not add any value or substance to the discourse.

This election cycle has lost its perspective. It should be about policy not personalities. I thought the hearty handshake between the candidates at the recent debate was a promising sign of civility. Yet the rancor and personal attacks persist. I have voted in Presidential elections since 1960, and I do not recall one at this level of hostility, even bearing in mind 2016. I am hopeful the election next week will quiet this animosity among us. All of us should take a deep breath, close our eyes, and hope for a peaceful November 5th and thereafter.
