DOWNIEVILLE — Boomtown Lounge & Backyard handed out awards for winners of its annual trivia competition on Thursday, January 23rd. The competition quizzes teams each week on random subjects in six five-question rounds, with the winning team receiving 3 points, second place 2 points, and third place 1 point. Points are distributed evenly among team members and tallied yearly to determine individual rankings.
The owner and publisher of this newspaper, Carl J. Butz, ran away with the 2024 competition, compiling 27.17 points, more than 11 points ahead of his closest competition. For his efforts, he will receive a dinner at a local restaurant and a two-night stay at a Downieville hotel, with a bottle of sparkling wine included. Carl plans to gift the hotel stay to his daughter. Carl also receives a trophy of a goat.
Ian Ileson, who could not be present on Thursday, finished in clear second place with 15.83 points, and Lynn Zanetta finished third with 8.25 points. Carl, Ian, and Lynn all received wooden-framed certificates for their placements in the competition. Tim Alexander and Ryan Steinwert, who finished fourth and fifth place, were awarded bags of chocolate-covered nuts.
Carl receives his first-place goat trophy.
The 2025 trivia competition is already underway, with Lynn Zanetta’s team winning on Thursday. Trivia is held most Thursdays at 5:30 PM at Boomtown Lounge & Backyard.
