Ms. Misita’s class kicks off Downieville School’s performances
DOWNIEVILLE — The Downieville School’s annual Holiday Show and Baked Goods Auction took place on the evening of Saturday, December 7th, at the Yuba Theatre. The event is one of the year’s most anticipated and was heavily attended by parents and community members. Featured were plays and recitations by Downieville School classes from Pre-Kindergarten through high school.
First on stage was Alicia Misita’s Transitional Kindergarten through 1st grade class. The sunglass-wearing cool kids performed “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” and finished with an acapella version of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

Next, Faith Edwards’ 2nd and 3rd grade class acted out the classic poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Santa, reindeer, and sugar plum fairies came to life before disappearing with a wish of “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
Ms. Bosworth’s class recites “Bob the Goofy Reindeer”
Katrina Bosworth’s 4th, 5th, and 6th graders recited a short story called “Bob the Goofy Reindeer.” The story involves Bob blasting Santa into space to avoid a blizzard at the North Pole, causing presents to shower down from the sky into chimneys.
The closing scene of “Cratchit’s Christmas,” performed by Ms. Markee’s class
Finally, new drama teacher Siobhan Markee presented a more serious play with her older students. The play, titled “Cratchit’s Christmas,” portrays the Christmas meal of the family of Bob Cratchit, Ebenezer Scrooge’s clerk, and is condensed from Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. The family’s meal (and their dislike of Scrooge) is shown to Mr. Scrooge by the Ghost of Christmas Present.
The baked goods auction, a benefit for school arts education, took place immediately after the performances. Regular auctioneers Frank and Bette Jo Lang couldn’t make it to this year’s auction, but Scott Steinwert and Laurie Halliday stepped seamlessly into the role for the night. Twenty items were auctioned off, raising over $950 for school arts programs.

Popular items auctioned included chicken tamales, cream puffs, a brown butter cranberry cake, and a triple chocolate cake. The big ticket item, however, was Darcy White’s Irish Whiskey Cake, which featured a bottle of Irish Whiskey baked into its center. After a drawn-out bidding war, the cake was sold to Downieville School Principal James Berardi for $210.
